and dial 119 immediately. Clearly and calmly give
your name, describe the location of the fire and the address.

CALLING
119 FROM DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHONES:
- For
privately installed phones (at home or at work) and for grey card
phones, lift the reciever and dial 119.
- For
green and orange card phones, push the emrgency calls button and
then dial 119. It is not necessary to insert a coin or card.
- For
red and pink phones which are the most common phones in shops,
you can get a person from the shop to call for you or get them
to insert the key into the telephone and dial 119, making a coin
unnecessary.
WHEN A
FIRE STARTS:
While
a fire is still in its initial stages, try to put it out yourself.
Slowly and evenly cover the burning object with the fire extinguisher's
powder. Don't aim the powder directly on the flame. When using
water soak the object and the surrounding area.
TO ESCAPE
A FIRE SAFELY:
Stay
close to the floor to avoid breathing in smoke which rises.

The Fire
Department is able to assist with all fire related
disaster prevention
advice. Contact them to discuss fire fighting methods and maintenance
of fire extinguishers, their purchase, etc.

MEDICAL
EMERGENCY:
When emergency
treatment is needed because of sudden illness, serious injuries
due to traffic accident, gas poisoning, serious burns etc., call
119 and an ambulance will be sent. However, an
ambulance will not be sent when the injury or illness is slight.
In this case, a taxi or car should be used to get to the hospital.

*When
you are calling an ambulance for someone else, go out into the
road when you hear the sirens to give directions.
POLICE:
Dial 110
to contact the police if you are involved in, or witness,
a traffic accident or a crime. Keep calm and tell the police your
name and the place and the nature of the accident or crime.
STORM AND
FLOOD DAMAGE:
Typhoons
are most frequent in Kochi during autumn. Most damage is caused
by heavy rain that occurs in the rainy season starting in June.
In preparation for a typhoon, the following precautions should be
taken:
- Listen
to TV and radio weather reports and disaster reports.
- To prepare
for power cuts, have a flashlight, candles, porable battery operated
radio etc.
- In case
of evacuation, know where your local evacuation area is.
- Make
sure you know how to contact others in your neighbourhood.
- Have
cash, bank account books, seals and valuables collected together
to take with
you.
- Have
drinking water, food rations, first aid supplies etc. at hand.
- Inspect
roof (tiles or corrugated roofing), windows, shutters, antennas
and signboards etc., to make sure they are not loose.
- Clean
out drains and gutters to ensure good drainage.

Japan is
subject to frequent and occasionally violent earthquakes.
IN CASE
OF AN EARTHQUAKE:
- Protect
yourself...Powerful earthquakes last for about one minute, so
take cover under a strong table and watch out for broken glass
and flying debris.
- Deal
with fire quickly...Turn off gas stoves and heaters.
- Confirm
emergency exits...Open front door and room doors.
- Do not
run outside in the confusion...There is the danger of flying and
falling objects.
- Extingush
fires quickly

go near narrow roads, walls, fences, cliffs or rivers.
- Be careful
of landslides and tsunamis.
- Help
neighbours...Assist in taking care of the injured.
- Escape
on foot with only the bare essentials...Never use a car to escape.
Only take water, first aid supplies, torch and essential valuables.
Wear durable footwear.
- Calmly
obey TV and radio emergency information broadcasts.
DISASTER
PREVENTION:
- Always
have a disaster pack prepared and in an accessible place. This
should include: water, first aid pack, radio and flashlight.
- Take
measures to prevent large objects such as cupboards and wardrobes
from falling over: Fasten them to the wall and secure objects
within.
- Prevent
Fires: Close gas valves when not in use. Install a fire extinguisher
and learn how to use it.
- Make
sure the whole family knows the drill in case of an
earthquake:
Rendez-vous point and route to it, fire prevention, individuals'
assigned roles.
